The Bill Lawerence has alot to do with it as well as the 1985 Whiteface Rat Nuno always uses. If you do a search on Nuno Amp settings they are really extreme on how he has to set the amp to tone down the brightness of his setup into greenbacks I believe.

Now I didn't care for the L500XL BLUSA pickup but it was Dime to tee but thin sounding through any other setup...hence Dimes and Nuno's setup.

I did pick up a Wes Hauch pickup which is similar at 14K as an alternative to the L500XL but I have'nt installed it yet so I can't comment either way.

I believe your best compromise is a 12K-14K ceramic magnet pickup like Duncan SH-5 Custom or I would really recommend a Duncan SH-6N neck pickup which comes in at 13K which has less compression and less mids emphasis than the SH-5 Custom it's more open and balanced yet very crunchy and gainy. The original L500XL's were 13K Ohms.

I still have a Bill and Becky L500L and a L500XL here to try as well but I think they will be super similar to the BLUSA L500XL.

Since you are on a real Nuno search PM me as I have something you're gonna need to nail it 100%.

I used to have a Dean From Hell with the L500XL.. I hated it.

But I love Nuno's tone. PM sent. :D

I downloaded a Sonic Maximizer plugin. I tried it on the exact same track. Does some interesting things.

Michael Nelson (Nielson ?) says Nuno used the BBE Sonic Maximizer in the studio for Pornograffiti. I do like the track with it versus the first track without it.

I would say in general you're missing that searing crunch/bite on the top end.

You might only be able to get that with the RAT; don't think you can EQ that in.

Pornografitti was ADA MP-1, RAT, BBE, etc (you know that I'm sure).

Don't remember OTTOMH what 3 Sides is, but I'm thinking Soldano.

Waiting For The Punchline was an old small Fender combo in many places (prolly RAT in front).

Wherever Nuno goes, the RAT goes with. It's even built into the circuitry of his sig amp by Randall.

The sonic maximizer brought some of that in.. I could hear that "searing crunch & top-end bite" is what I was missing.

The EQ got me a good part of the way !

Digging in when playing those riffs helps too.
