Re: Magnet Swap
Sounded brighter and tighter and more immediate to me. The A-2 was warmer, more sag to the response.
So you prefer the A-8 then?

Re: Magnet Swap
Nice. I swapped out the A5 in my JB to an A8 and I can for sure hear a difference .. it sounds "bigger" and tighter .. well that was my thought at the time (was about 3 years ago) now I can't even remember which guitar it is in and part of me is putting the different tone of each guitar with JB's in down to body wood and thickness haha

Re: Magnet Swap
I did some research into magnets when I started this thread because I never really messed with a magnet swap before.sytharnia NZ wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 5:31 am Nice. There's not much difference between A2 to A5, but going from A2 to A8 increases the magnetic coercive force by a factor of 3. Going from A5 to A8 is is an increase in coercive force of 2-1/2.
In this guitar it boosted the output by about 2dB and it made it sound thicker, beefier, more bite.

Re: Magnet Swap
So basically you have two Super 70 pickups now... but now you have one with asymmetric coils.
Did you never like that pickup with the A-2?
So what were your goals with this pickup? If you liked VHII that pickup with the A-2 is the cat's meow IMHO.
Are you trying to get it more L500 like in a way?

Re: Magnet Swap
Jeff wound that pickup for me 12 years ago. Back then I was playing bars & clubs in Houston with my hard rock/metal cover band "Bayou Sludge".harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 2:25 pm So basically you have two Super 70 pickups now... but now you have one with asymmetric coils.

I was using a modeling amp thru a solid-state power amp into a 2x12 cab because that shit was easy to cart around and run a line out to the soundboard.
It worked great in my Floyd equipped guitar thru that rig.. Sounded weak thru my boosted JCM-800.

Re: Magnet Swap
I know you like NUNO tone and Ed tone and you don't have an Ed specific guitar. So I am going to throw this out there to you and III has also made the same suggestion.
There is one pickup that can do a great NUNO and EVH tone and that is the Seymour Duncan SH-5 14K. If you can find an old one all the better with the short rough cast ceramic magnet but there is nothing wrong with the newer ones IMHO.
Just some food for thought.....you may have already tried an SH-5 Custom I don't know you have never said.
I do think Ed used 7-9K PAF.s Mighty Mites 1400 maybe 1300's and the super 70 on VH1 and VHII and probably went to higher output pickups to ditch the EQ's. I could be wrong but It's a theory.
WACF is supposedly Chris Holmes's Ibanez Destroyer.
