For me, I just don't like the look of the pickups in most cases unless they are covered. Some guitars I don't mind the look of uncovered pickups. Certain guitars it is more ok to me than other guitars. Ask me why and I couldn't tell you...lol. It is just what I think.

Call me crazy but I am not sure I have ever seen a humbucker with a plastic pickup cover. :o
Aren’t EMG covers plastic?
That doesn't count, they are actives.
It's still a magnetic field is it not? Just boosted by the electronics. I'm asking out of ignorance as I've never used an active pickup in my almost 40 years of playing so I'm genuinely curious.

I prefer the look of uncovered (and zebra) .. I have this perception that covered do suck tone based purely on comparing my uncovered JBs with my mates covered one .. all of mine were hotter and bigger sounding by a lot

Agree on the difference between covered and uncovered. The "tone suck" isn't anything I would call major and in some cases I could see it being used/manipulated sonically for the better. Of course the same can be said of uncovered as well.
