Slap dual variacs on that puppy and you're "In Like Flynn".

Re: SGMAD Solo Clip - Tone Test
You laugh... but using the second variac that way does impact how the amp responds and feeds back, it seems to give the amp the about to explode qualities. I read the Chris Merren account years ago and I tried and still use the second variac thing as a attenuator in my Ed setup both of my variacs are the Ohmites VT's that Ed used. The second variac acted like a second volume control supposedly but how the amp feeds back on closed notes is different than without. You literally have to experience it. It is some kind of electronic voodoo that does what Chris Merren describes as the reason for the two variacs on top of Ed's amp at the early shows. Now did Ed do this int he studio as well? You would have to try it and then tell me what you thought about it.
Guess what when you set the second variac for attenuation it seems to work best a 90 volts for some reason. Can you still get Ed tone without it, sure you can but the effects are noticeable.

It makes sense, as there's voltage going through the speaker wire to the cab.harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 4:41 pmYou laugh... but using the second variac that way does impact how the amp responds and feeds back, it seems to give the amp the about to explode qualities. The running joke is how the cockfags on Metro recycled the concept after 3 years and acted like it was "the brand new trick that guarantees you Ed tone"... like they did with so many other concepts.
As far as the two variacs on top of amps with Ed, it's also possible that the 2nd variac was for his backup amp... no one will ever know for sure.

Hey is using run of the mill Celestion Greenbacks in the clip, with no boost or EQ's, he is straight into the input of the amp with an Ibanez guitar that has a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB pickup. I guess that might back up Jim Gaustad theory somewhat as well....PLX wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 11:37 amThat's what Imma do to my old "garbage can" 2203 when I get that blown speaker back from the repair shop.harddriver wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 4:33 am Here you go PLX, this is what my 1972 Marshall sounds like with the RT mod.
