I paid for Sonar X3... then a few years later, there was a package deal for $300 in perpetuity (updgrades forever). I almost went for it, but decided not to. About six months later, you could get Cakewalk for free... bought out by Gibson, to my understanding. In any case, it is an excellent DAW, and it's free. Not sure why, but I enjoy using this program, and I suspect I use 10% of the features, at most.
One of my favorite features is that each track has an EQ, so that you can select different EQs for lead guitar, rhythm, organ, drums, bass, choir, etc., which really makes a difference so that each track stands alone in the mix. Each one as different options (e.g., heavy bass, pick bass, slap bass, etc.).
I never tried other products, and so, my recommendation is limited. But no complaints.
