I believe in the secondary Variac between the Head and the speaker cabinet theory, and as far as I know that is a Chris Merren hypothesis or specific knowledge. I have two Omite VT variacs for that very reason in my VH1 setup.
Look up Mr. Twistynecks experiments.
Honestly I think Robin L exposed most of the VH1 secrets IMHO, if you a re willing to do the work and check them out, there can't be much left to exploit.

The key to this circuit is the limiter/compander, which is in essence an NSL-32 opto-isolator.
If you listen to the "Back in Black" album by AC/DC, this circuit was used on every guitar track, according to Mutt Lange.
This guy does a pretty good demo of the effect on/off tones.
