You might want to SM57 straight-on (instead of off-axis) to slightly remove those "honk" mids and also get a skoosh more proximity effect (low end thump).

Generally, mics placed off-axis pull in more midrange... and sometimes not the good midrange (honk honk).
Dipped 700Hz more.

Moved the 7dB bump from 150Hz to 125Hz.

Definitely got ear fatigue now.

I can no longer hear the difference in these subtle changes.
I can hear the difference... the latest has a touch less honk in the midrange which is good.

I'm thinking that low end freq (150Hz right) needs maybe 3 more dBs up, or the Q (bandwidth) needs to be somewhat wider, so the other low freqs around get upped too. Actually, I vote both tweaks.

EQing can drive a person insane.

I'll be back... give the ears a rest.

One thing to note, the original recording (according to M. Wagener on Gear Slutz) Nuno was using a Bill Lawrence 500XL (?) , the ADA MP-1 into McIntosh SS Power Amp (!) into G12H-30s 4x12 cab.

M. Wagener used a BBE Sonic Maximizer to treat the tone as well... Nuno's tone for that album (Pornografitti) was fairly scooped (mids), thumpy and crunchy.

I think you're right again.

That sounds better cuz it's fuller now, although there's still this upper mid freq that sticks out kinda (maybe too much 3K?)

I think for that particular tune, though, needs a little more gain/hair... just a little.

What iR are you using, and is it one mic or two?

This one is totally different tone-wise (different clip, but yeah)... have to start from scratch here.

Very midrangey and needs some upper mid bite and low end.

I'd bump 3,4,5,6K a hair, add 125Hz, cut some 500Hz for starters

Tone needs a little more gain/hair (like the prior).

Still not happy with the mic placement. Going to reposition the SM-57 and try it again.

Thinking about setting up a condenser mic also to capture a different tone & blend the two.

You're real mic'ing this?

If so yeah - everything starts with proper mic placement.

You should be able to just use 1 SM57... put it right on the speaker cloth for best proximity effect (good lows).

Yes.

I re-recorded with the SM-57 on axis, just off the cap, and an AKG-220 approx 15" back from the cabinet, out of phase with the SM-57.

Moved condenser mic into speaker wash (where I like to stand when I'm playing).

Blended with SM-57 on cap edge (out of phase).
