Yeah setting it to "2" seems it would neuter the tone a good bit.

I'd try all the amp controls at "5", stomp on the MAGA Viper and go from there.

Yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of that.

I'll try to record something later and crank the volume.

PRESENCE : 5
BASS : 2
MIDDLE : 10
TREBLE : 10
PREAMP : 7

Two tubes pulled. Running two 6CA7's. Amp running at 70VAC (variac'ed)

That clip was into a 16Ω reactive load/line out (no speaker cab)
Not everything sounds good at 70VAC,unfortunately. ;)

I would turn up the variac to 90-100/110 VAC to tighten things up on the amp, it should get crunchier and less brown more Iommi like. If you are going into the Suhr or your reactive/resistive load box then into you IR's then volume isn't an issue. Mids on ten only works for Ed stuff, I'd roll the mids to 5-6 and treble 5-7 presence 5-6, turn your bass up until it fills out in IR response right before it gets muddy, Preamp set to 8 with the master up to 3-4 at at least it should get gainier that what was in that clip.

From watching Euge Vlaovirta you have to set thing for recording with your ears not usually as you would into a 4x12 cabinet........

The Treble Booster could boost NMV into some decent gain a JCM800 should be childsplay for it. 8-)

Is it going to be the same for the Nuno stuff ?

The first album tone is what I really want (Extreme - 1989) where he supposedly used a ProCo RAT into a Marshall JCM-800

Wall voltage ? 120 VAC ?

Short answer.................Yes

Do you have a 50 mids pot on your amp I can't remember? IF you do... remember 5 would be the mids dimed on a 25K midpot.....

I doubt NUNO or Iommi variaced any of their amps at any time.

Remember Nuno rolls alot of treble and presence out of his amp tone because of how trebly the L500XL is. I think you will have to do the same because of your super 70 high end. I still think you're gonna need a higher output pickup to pull a good NUNO off, but that is another subject all together. ;) I know you like you Super 70 but I have a feeling it's gonna fall short on the gain and punch department.

Remember the L500XL is 13-13.5K. I've said my peace about the pickup thing in other posts. ;)

Nuno didn't supposedly use the RAT, I read somewhere he supposedly used the Boss Turbo Overdrive or something but I doubt it. That Rat pedal is always on the top of his amps no matter what backline amp he plays. All you have to do is listen to lll's ADA MP1 with a Rat in front and there's that tone. The ADA is like a slightly gained up JCM800.

I'll be using my Floyd-equipped guitar for the Nuno stuff. That's got the 8.7kΩ A8 mag asymmetric humbucker.

I can't go back to the L500XL... I did not like that pickup at all. Too thin sounding.

Never tried an ADA MP-1. From what I can gather, Nuno didn't start using that until after the first record.

Michael Wagener was responsible for that on Extreme II - Pornograffitti

My point being is that the ADA MP-1 is like a JCM800 cascaded preamp.

I agree I can't stand the L500XL either, maybe the B&B is somewhat better but as I suggested earlier you should really seriously look at a Duncan SH-5 Custom or something equivalent. If you listen to lll's clips that's with an SH-5 Custom, it gets Nuno all day long and with less gain on the amp it get EVH tone all day long.....

The SH-5 is not a thin sounding pickup, it's thick and throaty with a nice mid punch but will still be crunchy. Seymour always described it as "PAF on steroids" I feel he is 100% correct.

What's not to like............... ;)

Yes, everyone who's anyone should have an SH-5.

It's a requisite pickup in any axeslinger's arsenal.

You mean to tell me PLX that throughout all your EVH tone questing you never tried a DUNCAN SH-5 Custom???????????????? I don't believe it????? :P

That can't be? Right after the PAF there was the CUSTOM?

You gotta have one in your pickup drawer somewhere?????????????????????????????? ;)
