They are quintessential ED tone IMHO...............

What are you running for preamp tubes?
V1 V2 V3?

I've got a few NOS preamp tubes here..harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 1:43 am I tube rolled alot of new production tubes in my 69 against my NOS Sylvanias, Tungsram, RFT and Mullard Blackburn 12ax7's.
I found the Modern Tung Sol reissue sounded very close to the Sylvania Longplates...very close in V1. The Tung Sol's handle high gain and OD pedal better than a Sylvania that tend to get plate ring.
For V2 I used a Ruby AC5HG 9th genration Chinese was somewhat similar to the SYlvania and are bulletproof for the cathode follower. JJ's work fine here too.
For V3 I went with an NOS Sylvania so pick your favorite PI tube, Maybe a JJ longplate, regular JJ or Sovtek LPS, the V3 Driver tube isn't really a picky positions for tone but needs to be kinda robust like the V2 beause they work hard driving PI into the power section.
V1 is the most important for tone reason IMHO then V needs to be able handle the CF current and voltage abuse.
Sounds like you are liking what you are hearing............
For V1 I like the bright spankiness and clank of the Tung Sol and NOS Sylvania for ED stuff, if you find it too bright then go JJ then darken things up.
I hated all the other preamp tubes I had in V1.. went back to the JJ and it sounds great again. I'll have to shop around and see what NOS preamp tubes I can locate.. maybe Antique Electronics Supply ?harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 3:51 am Just start tube rolling and see what you like in V1. In the end you might like the JJ's that are already in there. If you are going for all out Ed then thrown that JAN Sylvania 12ax7 in V1 and see what it does. It'll be bright and clanky but it just oozes ED to my ears although the 2203 circuit it might start to get some plate ring with gain pushing it or it may not you never know.
Wizards amps are bright and he exclusively uses JJ's because they dampen the brightness and the short plate handle a ton of gain.
What is that second 12ax7 under the Sylvania? Almost looks like a Tungsram?
So what is your opinion on the 6CA7's versus the EL34's now that you have heard both in the amp?

Yep that's them. I get my Ruby AC5HG chinese 12ax7's from Dougs tubes for V2. then you can stick that Sylvania in V3 and you're all set. You may end up still liking the JJ's PLX... sometimes JJ's just work great in some amps.PLX wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 5:07 amthis ?harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 1:43 am I found the Modern Tung Sol reissue sounded very close to the Sylvania Longplates...very close in V1.
