Re: EP-Pre > SVDS Pre > JCM800 VH2 tone
The teeth and the high end bite is back which is good. There is not enough saggy chew for VHII tone.
It sounds to me like you are running the amp at wall voltage? Or is this variaced down? If it isn't that's why is not warm and chewy like VHII...otherwise it sounds pretty good.
What Speaker IRs are you running?

Re: EP-Pre > SVDS Pre > JCM800 VH2 tone
Well that variac voltage and JBL D-120 was what I was hearing mostly.
I think he was all greenbacks on VHII and possibly the 55HZ greenback and or 55HZ 12H-30. I would not be blending a JBL D-120 for anything VHII IMHO.
Variac setting 80-90 VAC= SAG for VHII...105 VAC may as well be 115VAC for Ed tones......

Ok, same performance, just changed the speaker IR's to Celestion G12H-30 watt..harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 6:02 am Well that variac voltage and JBL D-120 was what I was hearing mostly.

I know you're right about the variac needing to be even lower.

Re: EP-Pre > SVDS Pre > JCM800 VH2 tone
Sounds much better all around. Would sound even better at 75VAC-85VAC on the variac...
Can you get a Pre-Rola 003 Pulsonic coned 25 watt greenback IR just to compare? I would say either 75Hz or 55Hz
If I were to use a 12H-30 IR I'd use the 55HZ model...which HZ is the one in the clip? 55HZ or 75Hz?

Agreed. It does sound closer to the isolated guitar track.harddriver wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 3:57 pm Sounds much better all around. Would sound even better at 75VAC-85VAC on the variac...

The impulse response I used there was "English made Celestion Vintage 30". No other specs listed on that one.
Ok, found it..
Same clip, just changed speaker IR's to "1969 “pre-Rola” Celestion G12H with 55 Hz cone".

YEP... crank that variac down and you'll be there.......................
I'd still look for a 25 watt Pre-Rola GREENBACK in both 75hz and 55 hz even though I personally like the 55HZ 12H-30. But according to most sources Ed used the 003 Pulsonic coned 25 watt Greenbacks and then the 25 watt Blackbacks. With lots of volume pushing them yeah I agree but since I don't move tons of air anymore I prefer the 12H30 55HZ 75HZ. Like i've said earliler I've heard he used both the 55Hz and 75Hz pre-rola greenback for recording. Live he was probably using anything in Marshall cabinets which would have been mostly blackbacks by 1978.
Now for recording and using the IR's then you should really look for the correct pre-rola Greenback IR's IMHO. I'd get the 55hz and a 75hz and then see which one you prefer.

Re: EP-Pre > SVDS Pre > JCM800 VH2 tone
Sounds good but still a bit much sizzle in the high end and needs a bit of warmth for VHII....Its a good WACF tone though! I'm digging it!
