COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A medical student at Ohio State raising money for cancer research suffered a fatal medical event while participating in the Pelotonia 102-mile ride.

Mason Fisher, who Pelotonia said was a three-time rider and an active member of its community, passed away Saturday.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of Mason, who was selflessly riding in Pelotonia to help cancer patients – a cause he was personally connected to," Ohio State University President Kristina M. Johnson said. "The death of a student impacts the entire Buckeye Family and I know that all of us send our deepest expressions of sympathy to his parents, family, and friends.”
Fisher turned 27 last month and was a second-year medical student. He collapsed at the 100-mile mark.

He was riding with a group of 27 other Ohio State med students called the spin doctors.

He wrote on his donation page that part of his reason to ride was for his friend Henry who passed away in May of 2021 after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

"For the loved ones we have lost, for those that continue to fight, and for those that will fight in the future. Every penny donated will go straight to this fight against cancer and will improve outcomes for all those affected," Fisher wrote.

Doug Ulman, the CEO of Pelotonia, said his team has been in contact with the family and that Pelotonia started with a moment of silence Sunday morning.

This reminds me of the time that guy was dumping a bucket of ice water on his head to challenge Lou Gehrig, and he had a heart attack from the instant shock to the system of having a big bucket if ice water dumped on his body.
