One thing about tone, I'm sure everyone can agree on... I can get that early brown sound... and if I play in the style of Van Halen (rather poorly, I might add), then it sounds like Eddie's tone. However, take that same tone and allow me to play how I play, my riffs, etc., and it sounds different. Tone may be due to the fingers, to a large degree, but I also find it's the syncopation, rhythm, etc., and what is coming through those fingers.
