I've never been a person who goes around reciting the lyrics to songs I like.. But I notice that most people only pay attention to the lyrics. I learn to play the music with no thought to the lyrical content.

It wasn't until the late 70's when I was talking with another guy about rock music, and I asked if he liked Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, or AC/DC. He said, "No."

Puzzled, I asked, "Why ?" His response was, "Because of the connotation." It actually took me a while to realize he was talking about the lyrical content. I had honestly never given it any thought until then. I was obsessed with the guitar playing and the tone of the guitars.

It is easy to overlook that (and I have) but if we are being honest it is something that probably should be looked at closer. There are some bands that are heavy that I will try to listen to and they are popular, etc but I immediately get a check in my spirit and stop. The frequency, content, artwork, lyrics, overall spirit of some of these bands is downright evil and creates unrest in your spirit. If you pay close attention, you pick up on it and feel it. Still, the chug is very compelling.

When you study hexachords and semantic shift you realize why the song "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath sounds the way it does. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chain employed perfect 4th harmonies in their melodies, as well as tri-tone chord progressions.

I think it can be mesmerizing to someone if you are weak of mind and susceptible to the influence. If you are not then it is just music and lyrics if one is grounded in the truth. Like some people are easily indoctrinated into cults because they are of weak mind and fortitute without moral fiber nor moral compass.

Everybody has their tolerances and limits. Whatever we allow into our life will influence us on some level and in some way. That degree can obviously vary a great deal. Nobody is above the fray and if you play with fire long enough you are bound to get burned. Possession vs. oppression...both are influenced. If a person is spiritually dead then they are most likely unaware. To the Believer, there is a spiritual sense or awareness that is discernible. They may choose to or not to follow it but it is there.
